Vernon grew up in Louisiana and says that track & field chose him and credits the sport for saving him from a rough neighborhood. He attended South Plains College before going to LSU and where he became one of the greatest 400m runners to ever run for the school. Vernon remains in Louisiana training under his college coach and is very outspoken about doing things his own way and not going the traditional route.
